Personnally, I am not a geek and I have some hardships when the new technologies are too complicate to understand. That’s why, three years ago, I was not very involved in internet.

Two years ago, I went to Canada in the frame of an exchange program and I realise the power, the efficiency and the simple use of internet. First of all, I was far from my friends and family and I needed to communicate with them. I felt the need to call them, to write them oftenly. But when you are in a foreign country, it can be very expensive. That’s why I used internet a lot because many softwares and applications enabled me for free very original and interactive communication. So, I started to speak a lot of MSN with my webcam, I downloaded Skype to speak with my grandmas who don’t have internet. I started to write and post photos on a blog to share my Canadian experiences. When I was at scool, we had an intranet where every courses were posted in advance. In all the university rooms, we had access to internet, a way to have more interactive courses.

When I was still in Canada, I had to find my internship in France. Of course, first, I sent a traditional mail on Hotmail with my CV and my covering letter. After a positive answer, I decided to call with Skype. I feared to have problem with my connection. In fact, I didn’t have any. I spoke with the marketing and communication director of the firm who asked some questions about my professional and student experiences. I spoke of course about my Canadian experiences and the fact that I created a blog. He was very interested cause his firm had one for their corporate communication. That’s one of the reason why I was hired for the internet development of the firm.

Internet raises some safety issues. For instance, we have to focus on websites which enable anyone to post videos with the content they want. It can be dangerous because it’s a way for some people to fell very proud of themselves and make them feel as an actor is a movie.

So, I think, some website such as Youtube and Dailymotion should have their one monitoring service to pay attention to the content posted and refrain some potentially dangerous videos.

I think it’s a bit idealistic to imagine a police for the internet. It should be an international one. People would think that it is a worlwide censorship. To avoid this kind of feeling, these kinds of website should have a part of responsability and warn the police from the state when they see this kind of weerd content.

But we can’t deny that Google provides us some really usefull and free services. However, we just have to keep an eye on the various Google’s purposes.

Microsoft has bought a part of Facebook for $240 million dollars which represents 1.6% of the company.

The amount spent by the world’s largest software maker make it go deeper in tis relationships with a startup based on community.

Besides buying a stake in Palo Alto-based Facebook, Microsoft also will sell Internet ads for its Web site outside the United States, broadening a marketing relationship that began last year.”This is a strong statement of confidence in this partnership and in Facebook,” Kevin Johnson, president of Microsoft’s platforms and services division, said during a Wednesday conference call with reporters and analysts.

Microsoft’s investment points out the increasing value of online communities like Facebook — a place where Web surfers look for dates, connect with friends and family, and share photos, videos and music.

Although MySpace remains the largest social network, Facebook has been growing much faster in the past year.Facebook attracted 30.6 million U.S. visitors during September compared with 68.4 million at MySpace. Microsoft’s entry in the social networking arena — “Windows Live Spaces” — attracted 9.8 million U.S. visitors, according to comScore Inc.

Because Facebook members share insights about themselves on their personal profiles, Microsoft might be able to harvest some of the data to pick out linked ads.
But if the advertising becomes too intrusive or heavy-handed, it could alienate users and decrease traffic to the social network.

The term internet was adopted for the first time in 1974. It was linked to the time when ARPANET was still interlinked with NSFNet, that the term it came into general use with an internet meaning any network using TCP/ IP.
